Christmas tales

The Legend of the Christmas Tree, by Nuria Blasco

It was Christmas Eve and had been snowing. It had stopped in the afternoon and the sky was full of stars. It was late and it was dark and a woodcutter was still in the forest. The man stopped to rest, then looked up and saw a small fir tree reaching for the sky. Thousand of little stars seemed to be resting on its branches. He cut the tree and took it home, where his wife and two children were waiting. Like a miracle, the stars had remained on the branches of the tree.

The woodcutter's home was illuminated by the small brillant fir during all Christmas Eve.

Christmas Tree, by Ana Navarro

It was a Christmas tree. It has always lined in a Garden Centre but this year it has been put in a pot and taken to the Christmas Market.

One afeternoon a family came and they liked it. The bought it and took it home. They put it in the living-room and decorated it with balls, stars, bells, angels, snowmen, sweets and lights, many lights. All this in many colors. Later, they put down a lot of presents.

The chilfren of the family were in front of the tree all day, singing and asking what the presents were, until the day they would be open ed.

The tree was happy in that house but Christmas finished and the father took the tree back to the garden and there it met again his friends who had been in other houses. Everyone told their stories and then they started to wait for the next Christmas.

A Christmas Tale, by Gloria

Many years ago, when the child Jesus was born, Belen's shepherds went there to bring gifts to him. Some animals saw this and they also wanted to bring a gift for the child.

A fox brought a chicken that he stoled. One mouse gives him a piece of tasty cheese. A great deer gives some branches of olive to him. A bird gives him some seeds and some grains and a wild pig a pineapple corn. Animals laughed because two doves hadn't got any gifts.

But then, they flowed over the the child's bed and with their beaks, they laid some plumes. These were warm and they kept the boy warm. It was the best present, because the doves had given him something from his own body.

A Christmas Tale, by Daniel

It’s not allowed to play an instrument or to sing in this area. Youcan only do it on Christmas days”.

Today is 24st of December.  William has got a classic guitar in his hands. He plays it and starts the song of Springsteen:

I'm waiting, waiting on a sunny day
Gonna chase the clouds away
I'm waiting on a sunny day

He tries to remember that in this song he must say “waiting on” and not “waiting for” because Bruce sings it in this way.

It’s very cool. From time to time, William rubs his hands in order to get them hotter, but is difficult. He is in the subway platform near Piccadilly Circus. In front of him, there is a girl playing a cello. Sometimes, songs of Ravel or Schumann can be listened. She is a very good player. She is very cold, too. William look at her and she look at William, but neither of them say anything.

William moves the guitar to his back. He thinks about the past. Some friends told that William was a great musician. He must travel to London  to visit some musical managers. He had to try luck.

William was calling from door to door but nobody open. He wasn’t lucky. Then, money finished at all. And now, he survives working some days in a Chinese restaurant.

William called his friends and parents. He asked for money but it was impossible. No one helped him. He has got talent. He only need to fight.

Because of that, today, Christmas Eve is going to be a hard day. He hasn’t got anything to eat.

Perhaps, hunger make him clever. He draws attention of the girl of the cello.

         – Hello, girl. Why not we play some songs together? You and me. Try it. At least, we won’t be alone.

         – For me, it’s okay, – say the girl.

William crosses to the other side of the platform. There, he finds the girl of the cello. He introduces himself.

         The girl is called Mia.

         – Do you play classic music only? Or perhaps, you can play any sort of music with the cello?

         – I have been watching you. You like Bruce Springsteen’s songs. Tell me one of them.

         – “The river” is ok?

         – No problem for me.

Both of them are ready. Mia plays the introduction. William follows her with the guitar.

I come from down in the valley
Where mister when you're young
They bring you up to do like your daddy done
Me and Mary we met in high school
When she was just seventeen

It’s strange to listen an instrument like a cello playing this song, but Mia plays wonderfully.

When they finish the song, there are some coins in the tin in front of them. People like this mix.

Mia offers to call a pair of man from Morocco that play near the station. In a few moments, two young people join them. They play a guitar and a flute.

         – Let’s play English songs. – William suggests.

         – The Beatles, perhaps? – Mia says.

         – Don’t worry. Come on.

The tin has got more coins. People stop near the group. It’s an improvised group but they play rightly.

         The song finishes. Mia says:

         – Let’s call the Jamaican people. Yes, those people at the beginning of the platform.

Ten minutes after that, Mia come back with five people from Jamaica. They wear colorful clothes and some hats like Bob Marley. They play reggae. Besides, Mia introduces  two young girls. They are from Chile. Everybody welcomes them.

         Mia takes the word.

         – Pay attention, please. Let’s play all together today. It doesn’t matter how much money we will earn. Just let’s play together. Like friends. Today is Christmas Eve. It’s hard this life. Only for today, let’s celebrate it in this way. Don’t worry about your problems. Don’t worry about anything. Let’s play together. Let’s be friends.

William begins to play a Christmas Carol.

The girls from Chile sing with fragile voices. Men from Jamaica play their instruments. Mia plays and sings.

Silent Night
Holy Night
All is calm
All is bright
Round yon virgin
Mother and child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace

Nobody realizes that a middle-aged woman is in a corner watching and listening to them.

William is delighted now. He has forgotten his problems. Moreover, he likes Mia very much.

         Somebody says:

         – Let’s play someone of The Police.

Other new melody sounds in the night.

The lady in a corner goes outside. In a few minutes, she comes back with some food and wine. Cheese, bread, fruit, cakes and a big pie. The musicians eat the food and drink the wine. This woman was going to a Christmas Eve party. When she heard the music, changed his plans and stayed there.

After that, musicians go on playing and singing.  Everybody contributes to the little party. It’s an improvised party but for them, it’s the best party in the world.

         Twelve o’clock.

Two policemen order them to go out. The door of the subway must be closed.

In the middle of the street, all of them embrace each other. They have spent a very nice moment.  They will come back tomorrow.

Now, the lady takes the word:

         – Please, listen to me. I’m Norma Archer. Yes. I’m right.  It’s true.  I’m Norma. I’m a music manager. And I want you. All of you. In this visiting cards is my name and my address. I will be waiting for you in my office, the next Monday. ALL OF YOU.  Do you understand?

         Everybody agree with her.

         – Well, HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO YOU. See you on next Monday. Thanks.

Norma gives a card to everyone.

Mia and William walk along the street. Now, they are alone. It’s cold, but this night, it doesn’t matter.

Suddenly, he takes her hands. William sings a song in Mia’s ear. A special song. It says about a man who wants to dance with her loved girlfriend.

Baby don't you know I love you so
Can't you feel it when we touch
I will never, never let you go
I love you so much

Because don't forget who's taking you home

and in whose arm's you're gonna be
So darling,  save the last dance for me.

And they dance in the empty square meanwhile a shooting star crosses the sky that changes the luck of them.

The End.
